Clumped isotope geochemistry of island carbonates in the South China Sea: Implications for early diagenesis and dolomitization

چکیده
Studying the diagenesis of island carbonates can be hampered by difficulty accurately constraining mineral formation temperature. The carbonate clumped isotope composition (measured as ?47 value) is based on temperature-dependent binding 13C to 18O, and offers a promising means calculating In this study, we report values from ~1 km-long drill core Meiji Reef in South China Sea, which are integrated with petrography, carbon (?13C) oxygen (?18O) compositions, trace element contents constrain diagenetic environment. We find that most digenetic alteration initial likely occurred above water depth ~200 m below sea level at temperatures between ~15 28 °C, fluids involved during calcites dolomites have similar ?18O modern seawater. Considering estimated secular variation seawater ?18O, dolomite formed an evaporative fluid source via brine reflux mechanism high convection rate late Miocene. Although isotopic compositions reef were overprinted early alteration, reflect temperature their depositional environment if depths depth. These results help refine existing dolomitization model tropical islands increase utility shallow burial settings valuable records climate conditions.

DIAGENESIS AND RESERVOIR QUALITY EVOLUTION OF SHELF-MARGIN SANDSTONES IN PEARL RIVER MOUTH BASIN, SOUTH CHINA SEA
A study of the diagenetic evolution of sandstones from Panyu low-uplift in the Pearl River Mouth Basin was carried out to unravel the controls on shelf margin sandstone reservoir quality. The reservoir rocks, Oligocene volcanic clastic sandstones of the Zhuhai Formation, have a burial depth of 2765 to 3440 m. 70 samples were studied using the granulometric analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD) anal...
متن کاملThe effects of diagenesis and dolomitization on Ca and Mg isotopes in marine platform carbonates: Implications for the geochemical cycles of Ca and Mg
The Ca, Mg, O, and C isotopic and trace elemental compositions of marine limestones and dolostones from ODP Site 1196A, which range in depth ( 58 to 627 mbsf) and in depositional age ( 5 and 23 Ma), are presented. The objectives of the study are to explore the potential for non-traditional isotope systems to fingerprint diagenesis, to quantify the extent to which geochemical proxies are altered...
متن کاملCarbonate clumped isotope thermometry of deep-sea corals and implications for vital effects
Here we calibrate the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer in modern deep-sea corals. We examined 11 specimens of three species of deep-sea corals and one species of a surface coral spanning a total range in growth temperature of 2–25 C. External standard errors for individual measurements ranged from 0.005& to 0.011& (average: 0.0074&) which corresponds to 1–2 C. External standard errors for ...
